Psychiatric Aspects of Renal Homotransplantation

SYNOPSIS

This paper describes some of the psychiatric aspects of the surgical transplantation programme at the Royal Melbourne Hospital Renal Unit. The stresses to which patients and their families are exposed and their methods of coping with them are considered. Various pathological reactions to stress are also described. The implications of these phenomena for a psychiatrist working with a Renal Unit are discussed.
