The Crisis of Hysterectomy

SYNOPSIS

This paper provides a review of relevant literature on the outcome of hysterectomy and on affective, defensive, cognitive, reality and object relations aspects of the hysterectomy crisis. The development, from the literature review and from the pilot study, of the research instrument, the Hysterectomy Interview Schedule is described. Parameters of response in terms of significant interactions are recorded for 100 subjects. It is concluded that women experience as helpful supportive relationships which enable them to discuss their fears and positive and negative feelings about the operation, particularly its effects on their marital and feminine role functions. Appropriate explanation and practical help are also of value to them.
