Pages 313-317 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Synopsis

Unemployment of educated youth is a major factor leading to youth unrest in Sri Lanka. In addition to an absolute reduction of employment opportunities, the personal aspirations of youth are not consistent with the demands of the labour-market. The historical reasons for this trend are analysed.

The difficulties experienced by less affluent youth who pursue higher education are presented. The nature of psychiatric casualty among this group of students and the therapeutic problems involved are discussed.
