Factors in the Teaching Environment Associated with Severe Psychological Distress Among School Teachers

Pages 304-313 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

A survey of over 2,000 school teachers found that 17% had symptoms of severe psychological distress compared with an expected figure of 9% for the community generally. The excess was associated with the teachers' exposure to 16 factors in the teaching environment. The most important factor was the misbehaviour of pupils. Most of the factors can be changed.
