The Use and Limitations of the Masking Noise in Pure-Tone and Speech Audiometry

Pages 115-128 | Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Abstract

Masking should be applied to the nontest ear when testing by air-conduction whenever the test-signal presentation level exceeds the bone-conduction threshold of the nontest ear by 40 dB or more. When testing by bone-conduction, masking should be applied to the nontest ear in most cases and whenever an apparent air-bone gap is observed in the test ear.

Various methods are discussed for obtaining the proper masking intensity. The lateralization test, and the “shadowing” technique are favoured.

Masking formula for AC and BC measurements and for speech audiometry are presented. A recommended routine procedure for masking in audiometry is also given.
