Pages 193-202 | Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Abstract

Certain problems underlying the inefficiency of current auditory screening programs for newborn infants are examined in the light of relevant research. Studies relative to neonatal behavior, observer effects, stimulus-response variables, non-responding infants and habituation are briefly reviewed. Ways in which current screening programs might be improved are suggested and a few of the many research needs are specified.
