Abstract
Several speech-level-indicating instruments have been checked for possible use in speech audiometry. The results indicate that no instrument covers all the needs for speech-level indication in both recording and in speech audiometry. For speech audiometry with recorded test material, the levels must be compensated for the influence of the test material, the speaker, etc., and the type of instrument is thus of minor interest. Live voice tests might be monitored by measuring the level of a carrier phrase. Any instrument could be used for this purpose, if calibrated.
