Assessment of Functional Integrity of Brain Stem Auditory Pathways by Stimulus Stress

Abstract

The effect of increasing the repetition rate of click stimuli on auditory brain stem responses has been studied in young subjects with normal hearing, in old people and in patients with multiple sclerosis. The most conspicuous effects have been observed in the amplitude of the responses, especially waves II and V, and in the value of the brain stem conduction time. Increased stimulation rates may serve as a method for the assessment of the functional status of the lower auditory pathways in diverse pathological conditions.

Nous avons étudié chez 7 sujets jeunes jouissant d'une audition normale (13 oreilles), chez 8 sujets aˇgés (15 oreilles) et chez 10 patients atteints de sclérose en plaques l'effet de la diminution de l'intervaHe interstimuli sur les réponses auditives évoquées du tronc cérébral pour des dies de 80 dB HL. Les effets les plus nets ont été les suivants: détérioration de l'amplitude des réponses des ondes II et V, d'une part, et, d'autre part, augmentation de la latence N1-P4. En diminuant l'intervalle entre les stimuli successifs, il est done possible d'établir un bilan fonctionnel des voies auditives centrales inférieures dans diverses pathologies.
