Energy and Signal

Abstract

The relation (if any) between energy and signal is discussed, as it occurs in physiological (i.e., more than quantal) events, Examples are given showing how the quantity of information transmitted may well be higher when ‘nothing happens’ than when some more obvious event occurs. The reasons for this surprising possibility are shown to follow naturally from the fundamentals of information theory.
