The Effect of Heparin and Protamine Sulphate on the Occurrence of Chylomicrons in Human Blood

Abstract

Heparin in intravenous injection can almost completely suppress and also prevent postalimentary chylomicronemia in man.

Large and small doses exert the same effect; even doses of 1 mg of heparin have a very pronounced effect, though it is of shorter duration.

The antichylomicronemic effect of heparin in intramuscular injection is less pronounced and very capricious; sublingually, heparin exerts no effect.

Protamine sulphate in intravenous injection is capable of counteracting the antichylomicronemic effect of heparin in man.

Apparently protamine sulphate increases the spontaneous number of chylomicrons in fasting individuals. But it does not seem to increase the high number of chylomicrons present 2V2 hours after the ingestion of fat.
