Albumin Metabolism in Normal Pregnancy

Pages 3-9 | Received 13 Oct 1967, Accepted 06 Jan 1968, Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

Albumin metabolism was studied in 19 normally pregnant women and 11 healthy, non-pregnant women.

In pregnancy plasma volume was significantly higher, serum albumin concentration significantly lower than in controls. The intravascular mass of albumin was normal.

The fractional catabolic rate and the rate of synthesis were not different from those of controls. A hormonal inhibition of synthesis is motivated.

Distribution ratio was significantly higher in pregnant women; the extravascular mass of albumin was reduced.
