Abstract

The urinary excretion of acid mucopolysaccharides in thirty patients suffering from generalized scleroderma and in a control material has been studied. Using daily excretion of mucopolysaccharide uronic acid per m2 body surface and the ratio mucopolysaccharide uronic acid excretion to creatinine excretion as parameters, no statistically significant difference between normal controls and patients with generalized scleroderma was demonstrated.

The distribution of individual acid mucopolysaccharides within the total acid mucopolysaccharide fraction excreted was obtained by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate.

No consistent difference in the electrophoretic pattern was found between normal controls and patients with generalized scleroderma. In both groups three fractions were regularly demonstrated.
