Abstract

Mogensen, C. E. Chromatographic Evidence by Sephadex Gel Filtration of the Unrestricted Glomerular Filtration of Inulin. Scand. J. clin. Lab. Invest. 22, 203-207, 1968.

Several recent studies have indicated that inulin has a considerable polydispersity. When injected into the blood stream for the purpose of determining the glomerular filtration rate, the high molecular-weight part of inulin may not be freely filtered and thus may give erroneous results. Filtration studies were performed in four healthy persons and six patients with severely impaired renal function. Sephadex gel filtration with determination of elution curves of inulin in serum and urine showed an identical pattern indicating unrestricted glomerular filtration for all the molecular-weights of inulin investigated. Comparison of different brands of inulin showed nearly identical elution curves.
