Abstract

Bilirubin dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution and neutralized to pH between 7.4 and 8 changes from a genuine solution to a colloid state in the course of several hours. The colloidal solution is stable and shows a characteristic light absorption spectrum. The true solubility of bilirubin is very low, about 0.1 μm (0.005 mg/100 ml) at pH 7.4 and ionic strength 0.1 M.
