Abstract

Protamine was infused with or without prior injection of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in dogs. Platelets were labelled with 51Cr. There was significantly less rise in pulmonary arterial pressure in ASA dogs (+ 3 mm Hg) than in control dogs (+ 13 mm Hg). The platelet particle concentration and 51Cr activity of blood decreased more than 90%, and the 51Cr activity of lung tissue increased tenfold in both groups. Pulmonary vasoconstriction rather than intravascular obstruction caused the rise in pulmonary arterial pressure.
