Abstract

The renal extraction rates of β2-microglobulin (Eβ), p-aminohippurate (EPAH), and inulin (Ein) have been studied in 36 kidneys from 22 patients with different kidney diseases. A positive correlation was found between the ratio Eβ/Einand EPAH. In seven kidneys with a high EPAH, Eβexceeded Ein. At low EPAHvalues, Eβwas less than 40% of Ein. These findings indicate that a peritubular uptake may play a major role in renal elimination of β2-microglobulin and, possibly, other low molecular weight proteins.
