The Action of Secretin on the Secretion of Enzymes by the Human Pancreas

Abstract

Increasing dose rates of secretin, given by continuous intravenous infusion, were used to study the effect of secretin on pancreatic enzyme secretion. It was possible to show that pancreatic output of trypsin increased with increasing dose rates of secretin at low levels of stimulation, while high doses of secretin inhibited trypsin secretion by the pancreas. It was concluded that much of the controversy concerning the action of secretin on the pancreatic secret ion of enzymes was due to the biphasic pattern of the enzyme response to secretin.
