Gastric Emptying Rate in Gastric and Duodenal Ulceration

A Clinical Study Including the Changes of the Gastric Contents after a Liquid Test Meal

Pages 193-201 | Received 17 Oct 1968, Accepted 25 Nov 1968, Published online: 25 Feb 2010

Abstract

The gastric emptying rate and the changes of the gastric contents 2 hours after intake of a liquid test meal have been investigated, using the method earlier described by Brömster et al. (1968). Patients with gastric ulcer had a significantly lower emptying rate than control subjects, whilst patients with duodenal ulcer did not differ significantly from the control subjects, though their emptying rate was faster. The changes of the gastric contents (pH, osmolarity and hydrochloric acid secretion) indicated that the quantities of gastric juice secreted were small in gastric ulceration.
