The Relationship between the Gastric and Pancreatic Secretion in Man

Pages 345-351 | Received 30 Sep 1968, Accepted 10 Dec 1968, Published online: 25 Feb 2010

Abstract

In 64 patients a significant positive correlation was found between the acid output in response to a maximal dose of histamine and the bicarbonate output in response to a submaximal dose of secretin, and between the corresponding volumes of aspirated gastric and duodenal juice. A poor correlation was found between the mean concentrations of acid and bicarbonate. Patients with chronic pancreatitis and duodenal ulcer, secreted significantly more acid in response to histamine than bicarbonate to secretin. All other patients secreted on an average slightly more bicarbonate than acid.
