Abstract

Gastrointestinal variables in man were determined after a test meal containing sugar, fat, protein, and polyethyleneglycol. Three tubes were introduced; one ended in the gastric antrum; through a second ending in the proximal duodenum three modifications of vitamin B12 were infused continuously and successively at constant rate; the third ended 65 cm from the duodenal. Gastric and jejunal samples were analysed for concentrations of indicators, food constituents, hydrochloric acid, bile, and enzymes. From concentrations of indicators jejunal flow and intestinal mean transit time were calculated. From these and the above-mentioned analyses gastric secretion and evacuation were calculated and further absorption of food and output of bile and enzymes.
