Abstract

Omeprazole effectively reduces gastric acid secretion by an interaction with the gastric H+K+ATPase proton pump in the secretory membrane of the parietal cell. The inhibition is dose dependent and long lasting. Under repeated doses of omeprazole, 30–60 mg/day p.o., over a period of 7–14 days, a reduction of the 24-hour intragastric acidity of between 72% and 99% has been observed (1–3). In one study, the cessation of omeprazole treatment was followed by intragastric hyperacidity (+ 35%) (4).
