Abstract

Conventional dose regimens of H₂-receptor blocking drugs have proved relatively ineffective for treatment of peptic oesophagitis. Animal model studies of peptic oesophagitis suggest that more profound suppression of acid secretion than that normally achieved by H₂-receptor blockers could result in marked reduction of the oesophageal mucosa damaging properties of gastric juice. Once daily omeprazole can produce almost total suppression of gastric acid secretion. In this open pilot study we sought to determine whether such an effect is associated with symptomatic and endoscopic benefit in patients with troublesome peptic oesophagitis.
