Psychosocial Factors in the Course of Gastric Cancer

Abstract

A recent trend in the research in chronic disease is to consider the possible impact of psychosocial aspects. They are taken into account on the side of the predictors and on the side of criteria. Behavioral oncology suggests that social support and education might influence the course of disease to a certain extent. In an ongoing study of 1444 gastric cancer patients this hypothesis could not be confirmed. The role of other, more important psychological variables is discussed.
