Abstract
Dr. Jim Mann of the Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford concluded his recent chapter on the nutritional factors that cause diabetes type II (NIDDM) by stating that there was strong evidence that fibre-depleted starch foods are a risk factor.1 I had stated in 1975 that the prolonged consumption of fibre-depleted starch aids the development of diabetes mellitus in suspectible genotypes.2 Some of the evidence will be reviewed very briefly in this article.
