Duodenal Ulcers Resistant to H2 Blockers: An Emerging Therapeutic Problem

&
Pages 81-88 | Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

Approximately 5-10% of duodenal ulcers fail to heal after 8 weeks of treatment with full doses of H2 blockers. Although the causes of this refractoriness still remain unknown, these ulcers may be successfully managed today, at least in the short-term period, by medical therapy. The development of resistance, however, probably means a worsening of the prognosis for many patients, since ulcer remission becomes difficult to be maintained.
