Abstract
OMGE is a federation of national gastroenterology societies which may enjoy a different overall status in each different country. No role for OMGE in the graduate teaching of gastroenterology is envisaged. OMGE should confine itself to postgraduate teaching and education, since graduate education may vary considerably in different countries in accordance with epidemiology, local needs, and primary and secondary care organization. The OMGE education survey conducted by Myren et al. (1) clearly shows that there are wide differences in the size and the estimated needs of the speciality, the formal requirements for specialization, and, obviously, the training and educational programs implemented in each nation. The ultimate goal of OMGE, which is to provide guidelines and minimal recommendations for an optimal organization of education and training, is still distant; however, the following recommendations derived from the OMGE educational survey may be pertinent to the future role of OMGE.
