Abstract

Gastroenterology has expanded greatly everywhere, in the last few years, in terms of new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and drugs, scientific knowledge, and the number of staff. In many countries digestive diseases are the third or fourth commonest cause of death, with approximate figures of 10–15 per 10,000, usually preceded only by cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and tumours.
