Pages 36-40 | Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

Postspecialization training in education is needed if physicians are to maintain continued competence for patient care. The mission of continuing medical education (CME) has not changed over time. The speciality of gastroenterology has CME goals for gastroenterologists similar to those of other speciality areas. The issues and problems related to continuing medical education for gastroenterologists are not different from specialists in other fields with the exception of the unique aspects of the procedures related to gastroenterology. The issue of continuing technical competence and acquisition of new technical skills is the same as in other specialities also requiring technical competence.
