Review: Photodynamic Therapy in Gastroenterology

Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) consists of giving a patient a photosensitizing agent and, when this has accumulated in the tumor cells, decomposing it by exposure to strong, usually red, light. Toxic singlet oxygen produced by this reaction will then destroy the malignant cells (1).
