Unilateral Pleural Effusion—A Rare Complication of Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis was performed three times on a 39-year-old woman. On each occasion, a right-sided hydrothorax with severe respiratory difficulties resulted. The pleural fluid did not disappear until 2–14 days after the peritoneal dialysis. There was no increase of fluid in the left pleura. The reason for this is not known. Patients whose pleural cavity fills with fluid during peritoneal dialysis should not be dialysed with this method.
