Serum Amylase in Renal Failure

&
Pages 257-262 | Received 11 Nov 1970, Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Abstract

Serum amylase levels and amylase clearance were investigated in patients with uremia without pancreatitis and in patients with normal serum concentrations of urea nitrogen and creatinine. The amylase clearance was markedly reduced in patients with severely impaired renal function, and the serum amylase values were significantly increased due to decreased excretion of the enzyme. The increases were not as high as in pancreatitis. There was a large spread in the values obtained, and there was no correlation between the amylase level and the degree of uremia.
