General and Extradural Anesthesia in Connection with Suprapubic Prostatectomy: A Clinical Comparison

Abstract

In a series of 150 prostatectomies, 75 were performed using general anesthesia and 75 using extradural anesthesia which was prolonged for about 72 hours. The two groups were compared with respect to bleeding and postoperative complications. The patients who were given extradural anesthesia required a markedly smaller number of blood transfusions. The bleeding complications were also fewer in this group. No disadvantages attributable to extradural anesthesia could be observed and a change to this type of anesthesia is therefore recommended.
