Optimal Intravesical Dosage of Thio-Tepa in the Prophylaxis of Recurrent Bladder Papillomatosis

Pages 26-28 | Accepted 14 Apr 1971, Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Abstract

The efficacy of intravesically administered Thio Tepa in reducing and terminating recurrences of bladder papillomas has been proved by several authors. The present report shows that adequate effect is achieved with a dosage that is far from toxic and which can be used continuously for years. Continuous use is, on the other hand, a condition for effective management. A course of 60–90 mg of Thio-Tepa every third month divided into three doses at intervals of 2–3 days is adequate and effective. Sixteen patients were under systematic treatment. Recurrences gradually ceased completely in 7 of them, and in 6 cases tumour recurrence was only a fraction of the pre-therapeutic incidence. Three patients failed to respond to treatment. The results achieved by authors who have used maximal doses which often provoke toxic reactions have been no better.
