Abstract

25 patients with long-term, chronic or recurrent infection of the urinary tract due to obstructive disease of the urinary tract were treated with sulphamethoxazole/ trimethoprim (SM/TMP) for an average period of 57 days. The dose was 80 mg TMP + 400 mg SM administered orally twice daily. The patients were checked every week with urine culture and haematological control. In 19 patients (76%) the urine could be maintained sterile during treatment. Only 4 strains resistant to SM/TMP could be isolated at the termination of treatment. Side effects occurred in 1 patient, who developed thrombo-cytopenia without any clinical symptoms.
