Abstract
We have attempted to do a differential leukocyte count on bladder urine specimens from 228 patients with urinary tract disease. Satisfactory preparations were obtained from 144 patients.
The percentage of eosinophils was as follows: 90 patients had < l % 40 patients had l-5 % and 14 patients had 633% on at least one occasion. The diagnoses in the 14 cases with more than 5% eosinophils were the following: papillitis calcificans and interstitial cystitis (Hunner's cystitis), papillitis calcificans (2 cases), papillitis necroticans (phenacetin abuse), papillitis necroticans, interstitial nephritis (in a patient receiving diaminodiphenyl sulphone), interstitial nephritis/nephrocalcinosis, interstitial nephritis/pyelonephritis with normal intravenous urography and without or with only insignificant bacteriuria (5 cases), malignant pyelonephritis and lupus nephritis.
Apart from bone marrow and blood, eosinophils are not normally widely distributed in the body (Archer, 1970). We do not know whether this urinary eosinophilia represents a new syndrome, a phase in the course of pyelonephritis or an occurrence of no consequence. We have been unable to find an account of a similar investigation in the literature.
