Electrophysiology of the Ureter an Experimental Animal Model

Abstract

The increasing number of kidney transplantations has stimulated the interest for ureteral function during urinary transport. The present report describes an experimental model which makes possible the simultaneous measurement of pelvic pressure, ureter action potentials and urine transported. In the model the depolarizing potential preceding mechanical urine transport is considered the most important parameter. These potentials are registered at 3 points of the ureter. All the informations are converted to electric signals which can be seen on a scope and stored on a tape recorder. By calculations of the conduction velocity a distinct difference between the upper and lower part of ureter was found. The model is found suitable for investigation of drug action and any changes which could arise from kidney transplantation using high or low anastomosis.
