Abstract
A review of the histological preparations from 1218 prostatectomies showed typical granulomatous prostatitis in 19 cases and early stages of the disease in 24 cases. Only 6 of the patients with typical granulomatous prostatitis showed a disease course which deviated from the course in patients with hyperplasia of the prostate. In these 6 patients, the symptoms were infravesical obstruction of rapid onset, developing after rise in temperature and symptoms of cystitis. In about one-third of the cases, the findings on exploration will resemble those in carcinoma of the prostate. The acid phosphatase values will lie within the normal range. The differential diagnosis must be based on a biopsy. Treatment has been suprapubic prostatectomy, and the postoperative course has not presented any special problems.
