Abstract

In a population of approximately 1.2 million inhabitants, the number of patients treated with chronic intermittent hemodialysis during one year was 48, corresponding to 41 patients per million inhabitants par year. During the same period, 21 renal transplantations were performed. An accumulation of patients requiring hemodialysis thus occurred. Accordingly, we recommend both the procurement of additional dialysis facilities (especially for home dialysis) and an intensification of the procurement of cadaveric donor kidneys. Furthermore, an increase in the exchange of donor kidneys among the countries participating in the Eurotransplant collaborative effort is strongly advocated.
