Pages 14-18 | Published online: 12 Oct 2009

Abstract

A comparative histological survey of the structure of the middle ear and the cochlea of the inner ear has been conducted on 125 species of mammals from eight orders. All the specimens were intra-vitally fixed and serial sections were cut in the horizontal plane. Measurements have been made of various features of special interest and examples have been taken from Marsupialia, Edentata, Insectivora, Rodentia and Chiroptera.
