Abstract
1. The enzymatic reduction of the oxidation states of organic nitrogen is reviewed.
2. Enzymes are characterized by their substrate and inhibitor specificity, intracellular location and nucleotide requirements and a scheme for the intracellular distribution of hepatic nitro-reductase activity is proposed.
3. Implications with respect to the in vivo fate of drugs are discussed.
