Audio-Visual Discrimination Test for Children

Pages 177-183 | Received 29 May 1973, Published online: 12 Oct 2009

Abstract

A new Danish discrimination list for children has been developed. This list, with and without masking speech noise, is read out from a video—recorder. The test affords a possibility of verbal as well as non—verbal answers. The present paper reports partly the preliminary clinical experience of the usefulness of various forms of test and partly submits the test results in normals in whom the material proved satisfactory. The purely auditory test in speech noise is applicable with great accuracy for normal children from the age of six. These children show a maximum discrimination loss of 18%. Comparison of the discrimination loss in speech noise and other data describing the social status of 25 patients with slight to moderate hearing loss showed a good agreement between the discrimination loss in the new test and the subjectively assessed social hearing handicap, whereas such an agreement was not found with TC, SRT, or the present child list.
