Abstract

The Department of Audiology of the University Hospital of Uppsala regularly prescribes supplementary hearing equipment for home use to hearing impaired persons. The functional usefullness and the technical quality of the installation of this equipment has been investigated. An electromagnetic field variability exceeding 10 dB was present in 9 of 24 homes equipped with an induction loop system for radio and TV listening. Other faults included deficient and improperly connected induction loop units and out of order equipment. A need for additional supplementary hearing equipment was found in six homes. Understanding and proper utilization of equipment was assessed as inadequate and the need for increased information and further visits was indicated.
