Allocation of Pre-Registration Posts —by Ballot

Abstract

Several different methods are used throughout the world for the allocation of pre-registration posts to graduating medical students. This article describes the ballot method of allocating such posts used in Brisbane, Australia. Using this system, only six per cent of students in the 1979 graduating class missed out on their hospital of first choice. The advantages and disadvantages of the procedure are considered.
