Abstract
Information concerning the undergraduate teaching of orthopaedics in United Kingdom Medical Schools was obtained through a questionnaire. A wide variation in the pattern of teaching was found in respect of the duration of the course, the form of the teaching and the content. A study of 129 students from four medical schools identified serious deficiencies in a basic knowledge of anatomy relevant to orthopaedics. A review of postgraduate training suggested that for the majority of medical graduates the undergraduate orthopaedic course is the only orthopaedic training the doctor receives during his medical career.
It is suggested that the orthopaedic course should appear earlier in the curriculum and that outpatient teaching should be emphasised.
