Self-directed Learning to Educate Medical Educators. Part 1: How do we use self-directed learning?

Abstract

The authors describe the seven steps they help self-directed learners to work through on the Diploma in Primary Health Care (Education) course at the University of the Witwatersrand. The steps are: 1. Situation analysis; 2. Compilation of a competency profile; 3. Self-assessment of learning needs; 4. Writing learning objectives; 5. Compilation of a ‘preliminary learning agreement’; 6. Negotiation of a final learning agreement'; and 7. Self-management of learning.
