Summary
A simplified method of mid-trimester abortion using extra-amniotic prostaglandin E2 and oxytocin administered by a Sage pump, with ampicillin, is described. The results of 52 consecutive cases have been analysed and show a mean induction—abortion interval of 12·6 hours for the combined administration of prostaglandin E2, and intravenous oxytocin, which compares; favourably with other more complicated regimens
Uterine curettage was employed in all cases to ensure complete emptying of the uterus This was carried out as a ward procedure and ensured inspection of the cervix before the patient was discharged A symptomless cervical laceration was noted in one patient.
