Meconium staining in second trimester amniotic fluid samples

Summary

Meconium staining was assessed in 376 second trimester amniotic fluid samples. Eleven of the samples had meconium confirmed by spectrophotometry. Serum and amniotic fluid α-fetoprotein levels were within normal limits for all 11 samples. The 11 pregnancies continued to term. There was no fetal distress in labour and the babies were all healthy.
