Summary

In the absence of neural tube defect or multiple pregnancy, a high maternal serum α-fetoprotein (>90th centile) at 16 to 18 weeks is associated with a higher proportion of both premature and dysmature babies. Low α-fetoproteins (< 10th centile) are associated with hypertension and with prolonged gestation.
