Summary

Summary

Forearm bone mineral content was estimated in 226 Chinese Han women and 115 Italian women. The Chinese women aged 31–50 years had a higher bone mineral content than the Italian women, but in the Chinese women over 50, the bone mineral content decreased much more markedly than in the Italian women. The onset of a decrease in bone mineral content was clearly (P<0·01) associated with the menopause in both groups of women, but on average the loss in Chinese women started 4 years after the menopause, whilst in Italian women it started a year after the menopause. The possible reasons for these differences are discussed.
