Summary

Summary

Forty-one patients with septic abortion were given co-amoxyclav (amoxycillin with clavulanic acid, Augmentin), 1·2 g 8 hourly for a mean of 3 days, followed by 750 mg 8 hourly orally for a mean of 6·5 days. Retained products of conception were evacuated from the uterus after 8 to 24 hours of treatment.

In over 90 per cent of the patients, infection had arisen as a result of illegally induced abortion, and the majority of these (85 per cent) were admitted severely ill. The main pathogens identified from high vaginal swabs before treatment were Escherichia coli. Klebsiella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus (anaerobic culture was not available). In 29 per cent of the patients, more than one pathogen was isolated.

Seventy-six per cent of the patients were cured and a further 17 per cent considerably improved at the completion of treatment. Sterile cultures following treatment were recorded in 83 per cent. Six patients had mild nausea during treatment not necessitating discontinuation.
